BIOMEDICAL SIGNAL ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS USING LABVIEW
Abstract
Biomedical instrumentation is the application of biology based science and instrumentation techniques for research and health monitoring purposes. As 21st century medicine and health care becomes increasingly sophisticated, the demand grows for highly precise equipments, capable of performing and analysing a battery of technical procedures to screen, maintain and improve human health. One such advancement in bio-medical field is our BIOMEDICAL SIGNAL ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS USING LabVIEW, which effectively utilises virtual instrumentation for the analysis of biomedical signals.
Of the biomedical signals, we have mainly considered ECG wave which is acquired, filtered, amplified and converted into digital form and hence fed into the PC with the help of parallel port interfaces and then monitored, analysed and displayed with the help of LabVIEW, which brings a greater versatility into this application.
Conventional ECG instruments with a lot of clumsy wiring and usage of stylus probe for the recording of signals were not able to reproduce the exact ECG waveform; moreover storage of data was a major concern. Our ECG analysis using Lab VIEW provides an alternate solution to this by providing accuracy and more storage capacity with ease. Further it avoids any shock hazards since proper isolation has been provided.

Transmitter and receiver are commonly used in Engineering projects for remote control of objects. In particularly, in Robotic system uses tranmitter and receiver. Here i would like to describe the basics if IR transmitter and receiver

Basics of IR transmitter

An electroluminescent IR LED is a product which requires care in use. IR LEDs are fabricated from narrow band heterostructures with energy gap from 0.25 to 0.4 eV. Infra red transmitter emits IR rays in planar wave front manner.
Eventhough Infra red rays spreads in all directions, it propagates along straight line in forward direction. IR rays have the characteristics of producing secondary wavelets when it collides with any obstacles in its path. This property of IR is used here.
When IR rays gets emitted from LED, it moves in the direction it is angled. When any obstacle interferes in the path, the IR rays get cut and it produces secondary wavelets which propagates mostly in return direction or in a direction opposite to that of the primary waves, which produces the net result like reflection of IR rays


Basics of IR receiver.
Infrared photo receiver is a two terminal PN junction device, which operates in a reverse bias. It has a small transparent window, which allows light to strike the PN junction. A photodiode is a type of photodetector capable of converting light into either current or voltage, depending upon the mode of operation. Most photodiodes will look similar to a light emitting diode. They will have two leads, or wires, coming from the bottom. The shorter end of the two is the cathode, while the longer end is the anode.

A photodiode consists of PN junction or PIN structure. When a photon of sufficient energy strikes the diode, it excites an electron thereby creating a mobile electron and a positively charged electron hole. If the absorption occurs in the junction's depletion region, or one diffusion length away from it, these carriers are swept from the junction by the built-in field of the depletion region. Thus holes move toward the anode, and electrons toward the cathode, and a photocurrent is produced.

Microcontroller or micro processors are used for collection of instruction codes for manipulating and renovation of data. The number of information collected from transducer is defined within itself and it will give order to driver circuits. Thus the way electronics circuits simplify with more efficiency.
Since the automation world reduce the human Borden and make time management to increase production. The main objective of this project is to transfer more than two kinds of materials in a single conveyor which reduces the expensive and split into one by one on both side of main conveyor towards the main target. Then the microcontroller program is written in such a way to talk to the driver circuit and record the status of information from different detector. If the device detect the type of material, inform the same to corresponding conveyor via processor.

This project deals with “Automatic Energy Meter Reading through Power Line Communication”. Presently in India Energy Meter reading is done through nominated officials by visiting the residential and commercial places. Our project is proposed to change the existing energy metering by employing the Power line communication technology. Power line carrier communications take place over the same lines that deliver electricity.

This technique involves injecting a high frequency AC carrier into the power line and modulating this carrier with data originating from the remote meter or central station. Power Line Communications - transmits data over an existing high-voltage power line instead of requiring dedicated cabling. (PLC) can thus provide an inexpensive solution for transmitting data in a pre-wired location.
The solution for residential Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) consists of a host computer, a gateway interface and a low-cost Power Line Carrier (PLC) residential meter. LCD display showing the meter readings, date of bill payment and billing details. The system also incorporates a power cut feature, which can be activated when the consumer doesn’t pay the bill within the due date. The system performances become superior to conventional methods. Now this scheme becomes implementing able with advent fast computing devices.

Simulation software



Simulation software

Now a days engineering projects at ug and pg level are done with simulation in addition to hardware projects. This is mainly because of there may be possibilites of failure of hardware. So the expenditure incurred becomes so high while testing hardware. In order to avoid wasting of time and cost un necessarily, software simulations are done. Once the simulation become successful then the same may be implemented using hardware without too much expences. I would like share some of the softwares used for simulation.


At electronics level

1. PSpice - This software can be used for simulation of electronic circuit. We can draw the shematic of the complete circuit and simulate for various inputs. Instantaneous output waveforms with respect to time or any other parameters can be obtained. Once the circuit is successfully working, then the same can be implemented using pCB boards and test can be done.

At Power level:

2. Matlab: This is another software. It consists of various toolboxes and blocksets which can be chosen according to the projects. The toolboxes are on control systems, simpowersystems, fuzzy, neural networks, genetic algorithms, aironatical engineering, electrical machines and power semiconductor devices. Compared to Pspice, this software can be used almost all the advanced technology related projects.

Transmission and Distributions:

3. ETAP : This software is mainly used for Electrical transients applications and power systems, transmission lines and so on.
Instrumentations Level:

4. Labview: It is a very important software for Instrumentation field where each instruments can be connected as if real instruments are connected. And the input and output waveforms can be instantly seen in the monitor. The CRO like devices can be avoided wher everththing can be simulated using pc.
Integrated Chip design:

5. Xilinx and Squadran : These are all the softwares used for simulation and synthesis of VHDL codes. This is mainly used for desing of large scale integrated circuits and chips.

The devices offered by this is easily installabe and take very short duration for complete tracking of vehicle. In this device, recent technology updation and mapping are possible. The advantages of the GPS insight are they charge only 1.5 to 2 doller per day per vechicle and no more labor paid when people are not really working on fuel saving routing efficiencies.

Another thing is to get complete documentation which will be offered by this site through its GPS Insight support wiki for customers, which gives full technical support for their customers.

I Robot

I (intelligent) Robot: Abstract
In this completely modernized world, every industry is automated, which indeed requires a robot for its functioning. One of the biggest challenges in constructing a robot lies in the precise control.

The project deals with the construction of a robot which is capable of doing autonomous surveillance of land terrain, with live video capture and transmission for analysis purposes, with the ability to lock manually and shoot the target on command. The design of the robot is innovated in such a way that the maneuvering ability has been greatly enhanced supplemented by a tailor made innovative obstacle detection algorithm.

The control room has been empowered with manual over ride and control of the bot. Analysis of data is done at the control room and corresponding commands to the bot are communicated wirelessly such that any target can be locked and fired. Analysis of data by image possessing gives the cutting edge in determining moving objects, the position in the field of view (X,Y) and the velocity in the direction of motion. Informing or alarming the control room on any object movement.

An attempt has been made to make the robot intelligent on object detection and avoidance for maneuvering in a terrain. Thus the robot has been named as I-ROBOT (intelligent-Robot).

This robot can be used in various industrial applications such as terrestrial, underground and space explorations, navigation in hazardous environments and in military operations, wherein human operation is not possible. Enhancements can be done by adding a series of modules on this robot for other specific purposes like audio recordings, metal detection, fire sensing, smoke detection etc.
